Audubon Birds - A Field Guide to North American Birds iPod touch app

Audubon Birds has put their paperback field guide of eastern and western birds of North America into an app for the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad that includes all birds of North America. I have the version for the iPod touch and it is amazing. The app allows you browse for species very quickly and therefore do not have to page through a lengthy field guide. The field guide app allows you to explore for species on the home screen by browsing by shape, family, and name. While using the app in the field, you can enter sightings as well as listen to songs and calls of various species. The app contains a folder where you can enter your entire life list for the areas you keep them for.

Because I have used the paper version to the birds of eastern North America (as well as other field guides), I have come to like studying actual photos of birds instead of paintings or drawings. This app gives several photos for each species in different plumages and sexes. You can also view similar species to compare to your visual observations. Other various tools in this app include the reference guide to parts of a bird, how to identify a bird, the natural history of birds, a glossary of terms, and a note about bird conservation etc. This is a great app for a great price and can be a great gift or reference tool for any level of birder. You get the entire guide to birds of North America in one app and at your fingertips if you have access to an iPod touch, iPhone, or iPad. This is by far one of the best apps to own if you are a serious birder.
